The Approval Nobody Warns You About Before a New App Can See Your Customers

We assumed the hardest part of getting a new store connected to yoursignalstack would be the code. Turns out one of the hardest parts was a silence of about two weeks from a platform’s back office, and no amount of clever engineering makes a review board move faster.

Here’s the short version, if you’ve ever installed a new analytics or marketing app on your Shopify store and noticed orders and products show up right away but customer data doesn’t: you probably haven’t broken anything, and the app probably isn’t broken either. You’re most likely waiting on an approval that happens on Shopify’s side, not inside the app at all.

Why does customer data show up later than everything else?

Before any new app is allowed to sync a merchant’s actual customer information, not just orders and product counts, Shopify requires it to go through a manual review specifically for that. It’s separate from the general review that gets an app listed at all, and nothing about the install flow itself tells you it’s happening. Orders and products can start flowing immediately. Customer data waits behind a door you can’t see, until someone on Shopify’s side opens it.

We found this out the way most people find out about things that aren’t documented anywhere obvious: a new merchant connected their store, and their customer numbers just weren’t populating. Nothing was wrong with their store. Nothing was wrong with our code. We’d filed the request for that approval, and it simply hadn’t cleared yet — that review took roughly two weeks on its own timeline, and there was nothing to build or fix that would have made it faster.

What we did while we waited

We already had one store fully connected and working before this came up. The tempting move would have been to keep tinkering with the connection logic while the new approval was pending, to try to speed things along. We deliberately didn’t touch it. Nothing about the store that already worked needed changing, and the risk of breaking something proven while chasing something still under review wasn’t worth it. We waited, the approval came through, and the new store’s customer data started syncing on its own.

Why this matters to you

If you ever install a new analytics, marketing, or customer-data app on your store and notice orders or products show up right away while customer information stays blank or incomplete for a while afterward, that’s very possibly this same kind of platform-side approval gate, not a broken integration on the app’s end. Before assuming the app is faulty, or writing a frustrated support ticket, it’s worth asking the app’s team directly whether they’re waiting on this kind of review. It’s a completely normal, if invisible, part of connecting a new app to your store, and it’s a much more likely explanation than something being wrong.

We’re building yoursignalstack in public, gaps and waiting periods included, because we’d rather you see the real process than a highlight reel. If you want to follow along, leave your email and we’ll let you know when it’s live.
